We've tried May Lindstrom's The Blue Cocoon That Everyone Is Talking About

Decades later, May Lindstrom offers a concise choice of skincare that’s caringly produced in small batches in the brand’s Los Angeles ‘kitchen’ lab. With every ‘raw’ ingredient (think herbs, plants, minerals and honey just to name a few) being sustainably sourced and thoroughly checked before usage, it’s fair to say the creation of every single one of May’s products is practically an artisanal approach, and a true act of love.
May Lindstrom is geared towards all skin types, especially sensitive skin, with some of the formulas aimed at those going through chemotherapy and health challenges. One of the brand’s superstar bestsellers, The Blue Cocoon, is a unique balm and facial oil hybrid that can be used in a multitude of ways, including as a moisturiser for sensitive skin and overnight mask. In fact, it’s designed to soothe the skin and the senses.
We asked two team members with different skin types and concerns to test May Lindstrom The Blue Cocoon and share their first impressions and thoughts with us. Keep scrolling to see if they think The Blue Cocoon is a must-try…

VANESSA’S MAY LINDSTROM BLUE COCOON REVIEW
• Skin type: Oily, sometimes dry and dehydrated
• The product: May Lindstrom Skin The Blue Cocoon, £213.00

Like many people with oily skin, I’m weary of facial oils and thick, concentrated formulas. However, as contradictory as it may be, I do love rich textures and moisturisers – and I was intrigued by how versatile The Blue Cocoon sounded.

I decided to first try The Blue Cocoon in my evening routine, as sometimes I love a rich mask at night. I was also keen to try it on its own and as a masque to see what it could do in comparison to my usually one-too-many-steps skincare routines. I was initially surprised at how thick the texture was, but even more surprised at how it gradually turned into a very lightweight texture. I loved it from the get-go – it felt so soft and soothing on the skin, and I loved being able to apply it around my eye area and the lips.
My skin felt very soft in the morning – I wouldn’t say it was glowing, but I definitely didn’t look dull either. For the sake of research – and because versatile formulas genuinely fascinate me – I tried The Blue Cocoon first thing in the morning too. As the brand recommends, I applied it straight after washing my face and while it was still wet. But rather than using it on its own and just as a moisturiser, I applied the rest of my skincare routine. Surprisingly, zero balling or piling occurred – not even after applying my makeup.

I haven’t been using it long enough to see any long-term results, but so far I can say I adore the texture and the subtly glowing effect it gives. I took some photos of myself on the day I had applied it in the morning together with my full skincare and makeup routine, and I couldn’t work out why I looked so fresh in the photos when they’d been taken so late in the day. I then remembered The Blue Cocoon – maybe it worked its magic!
Because my skin does get dry and dehydrated, I can see myself reaching out for it during the colder months. I’m going to continue using it but probably not twice a day or every day – I think there’s a high chance that a product like this would clog my pores. I also can’t imagine using it on its own, I love my long, multiple-step routines too much. But I’ll definitely be using it as a night masque a couple of times a week and combine it with other active ingredient treatments, such as vitamin A and acids.
HANITRA'S MAY LINDSTROM BLUE COCOON REVIEW
• Skin type: Oily and acne-prone
• The product: May Lindstrom Skin The Blue Cocoon, £213.00

As someone with oily and acne-prone skin, I usually try to stay away from face oils as I want to avoid any potential breakouts or skin reactions. When I first tried the May Lindstrom Blue Cocoon, the texture felt very nice and applied on the skin really well. The only thing is that I wasn’t a fan of was the smell, mostly because I try to stay away from fragrance in my skincare, just to avoid any reactions.

I used Blue Cocoon in the evening, as the last step of my skincare routine. As the temperatures are dropping, I think my skin quite enjoyed the rich texture, as it really does deeply hydrate the skin. I didn’t use it during the day, mostly because I didn’t want my skin to look too oily and shiny.
I don’t think this product will be an everyday skincare staple for me, but I will definitely keep using it on days when my skin feels quite dry and needs the extra TLC. Anyone who really enjoys their skincare rituals and the aromatherapy side of it will be an absolute fan of this product.
THE VERDICT ON MAY LINDSTROM THE BLUE COCOON
While Vanessa loved using The Blue Cocoon and Hanitra enjoyed the hydrating aspect of it, both of them agree that it might be a bit too rich for someone with oily skin. “As someone who has oily skin but loves rich finishes, I know I’m the exception ,” says Vanessa. “So I can imagine someone with dry skin would love this as much as or even more than I have.”
• The Pros: Our Space NK team members appreciated how incredibly soothing The Blue Cocoon felt. “Luckily my skin doesn’t get irritated too often, but the next time it happens, I’ll be reaching out for this,” Vanessa says. “Which is why I think it would probably be fab as a moisturiser for sensitive and sensitised skin – especially if they need a simple and stripped-back routine and prefer to opt for just one product.”
• The Cons: While it is designed for all skin types, Vanessa and Hanitra would advise those with oily skin to proceed with caution.
