3 Steps To Creating The Perfect Smoky Eye According To Jamie Genevieve

3 Steps To Creating The Perfect Smoky Eye According To Jamie Genevieve
A smoky eye is a year-round makeup staple that can be dialled up or down depending on the occasion. We asked makeup artist, influencer and VIEVE brand founder, Jamie Genevieve for her tried and tested method to achieving the ultimate smoky eye.

Our brief to Jamie was a speedy, straightforward guide to achieving the perfect smoky eye that requires almost no skill. Jamie came back with three simple steps and a top tip: ‘The secret is layering and blending.”

Step 1: Choose Your Base

“Start with a long-lasting base like the VIEVE Eye Wand, £25.00. As they are so long wearing this is the perfect base to start off any eyeshadow look no matter whether you are doing a soft or dramatic smoky eye,” suggest Jamie. Using a cream formula will help your look last longer and takes next to no time to apply.

“Camel is my go-to shade and can be used as a base or worn alone.” Swipe across eyelids and use your finger to blend – you can use an eyeshadow brush if you prefer (we love Space NK Brush 301 - Concealer and Eyeshadow, £14.00).

Step 2: Layer Your Eyeshadow

“Once I’ve applied my base, I layer powder eyeshadows from VIEVE The Essential Palette, £49.00. The shade Delicious works really well all over and then I use Buff along the crease to create a seamless blend,” says Jamie. If you’re not confident pairing shades to achieve that smoky effect, definitely invest in an eyeshadow palette as they combine complimentary hues and take the guesswork out.

“If you want a dramatic smoky eye, I would use the same technique but use the Eye Wand in Espresso as your base rather than Camel and layer Goodnight from the Essential Eyeshadow Palette on top,” says Jamie.

“Regardless of which shades you opt for, my top tip is to use a dry brush to blend each layer as you go,” adds Jamie. This will make sure each shade is seamlessly blended and avoid any streakiness.

Step 3: Correct Any Mistakes

Before you run out the door, Jamie has one last trick: “Use a medium to full coverage concealer underneath your eyes to brighten and conceal any darkness. A touch of concealer on a brush can also help clean up any mistakes.”

Unsurprisingly, Jamie uses VIEVE Modern Radiance Concealer, £27.00 to touch up her undereye area. It’s a good formula for dry skin types as it is infused with hyaluronic acid. If you prefer a balm texture, we also love Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer, £27.00.
