Moisturiser FAQ

Every moisturiser is unique. That said, there are some common factors you’ll find across the board. Firstly, hydration. This is the most rudimental moisturiser function, locking moisture into the skin, while feeding it with added nourishment and skin-plumping goodness. The second is protection. Even before we add in benefits like SPF, face creams create a barrier against moisture loss from environmental factors, while helping shield skin from external irritants.

Not just a step for those with parched skin, every skin type can benefit from a face moisturiser. Yes, even oily and acne-prone skin types. That’s because excess oil production can actually be a sign of skin dehydration - a problem your face cream could solve. Hydration is also crucial for maintaining a healthy skin barrier, with signs of a weakened skin barrier including breakouts, inflammation and increased skin sensitivity.

Moisturisers are boosted by a multitude of skincare ingredients and their benefits. Some popular ingredients include humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which draw moisture into the skin. Emollients to help fill in gaps between skin cells for softer, smoother-looking skin, while occlusives like squalane form a protective barrier on the surface of the skin, helping to seal in moisture and prevent water loss.

Your skin type and skin concerns will dictate the type of face cream you use. As an overview, ceramide creams are great for dry skin types, sensitive skin will benefit from calming moisturisers that are free from irritants. Peptide-boosted creams can help plump out fine lines and wrinkles, while acne-prone skin will benefit from a moisturiser with oil-balancing properties.

The simplest skincare routines call for a good cleanser, moisturiser and SPF. If you have a more robust routine, your moisturiser should be applied after your treatment – whether that’s an essence, serum, mist, or a combination. This allows your face cream to lock everything in place, including moisture and active ingredients.
