Why La Mer's Creme de la Mer Cream Is Worth The Investment
La Mer’s bestselling moisturiser is almost as renowned for its price tag - £165 for 30ml, as it is for its soothing, hydrating formula. The question of whether the Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream is worth it plagues the product. So, we asked three Space NK team members of different ages and various skin types to try the luxury moisturiser and share their honest review.
Victoria’s Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream review
• Skin type: Dry to combination
• The product: La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream, € 98,00
A previous boss once waxed lyrical about the soothing benefits of La Mer’s moisturisers, in particular the Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream. Day to day she’d use the La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Cream, € 98,00, but whenever her skin was feeling irritated she’d reach for the OG – and as a beauty director with over 30 years under her belt, this was high praise indeed.
Coincidentally, when I was lining up this review with Dotty and Yasmin, my skin reacted badly to an SPF I’d be trialling. You can see from the before photo below that my cheeks were inflamed, and my skin was breaking out. I decided to put my former boss’s words of wisdom to the test, and I wasn’t disappointed.
While the Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream didn’t repair my skin overnight or banish my blemishes, it did help calm and soothe. I would say the inflammation dissipated within a couple of days of using the moisturiser in the morning and evening, and just under a week for my skin to return to normal. I’m not claiming this face cream will solve all forms of irritation and inflammation, but it did help with my bout.
The texture is very thick and needs to be warmed up on your fingers before you apply it onto your skin. I loved the richness as my skin was feeling irritated and dry, but I’m not sure if it would be too heavy in the height of summer. As with all La Mer formulas and luxury skincare products, the texture, scent and packaging offer unparalleled luxury.
Dotty’s Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream review
• Skin type: Normal to dry
• The product: La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream, € 98,00
My skin was feeling quite dry before I started using La Mer’s moisturiser due to the change in season, so I slotted it into my routine as my morning and evening face cream. I really love the texture, it’s nice and creamy ad absorbed beautifully into my skin. The scent is light and fresh, and after only a few days my skin felt soft and plump without any dryness.
Within hours of applying Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream, I could feel the formula working through my skin concerns, which was mainly nourishing the dry patches. I think what surprised me the most though was the dramatic change I noted in the firmness of my skin. After a couple of weeks, I really could feel a difference in the firmness and skin tone.
You only need the tiniest amount, so while it is on the expensive side, I can see how it would last a long time. I love this moisturiser and will use my pot sparingly, so it lasts forever!
Yasmin’s Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream review
• Skin type: Combination to oily
• The product: La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream, € 98,00
My skin had been on the drier side before I started using La Mer’s moisturiser as I’d been using a new cleanser, which was too harsh and left my skin feeling stripped. Like Dotty, I really loved the texture – it felt hydrating without being too thick or sticky. My skin didn’t feel weighed down and I could easily apply makeup straight on top. There’s a fresh, subtle scent, but it’s not overpowering in any way.
Again like Dotty, I used the Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream in the morning and evening. The trick is to massage it with your hands to warm the formula up before pressing it onto skin. This is a moisturiser you have to take your time with. I loved this as it felt like more of a ritual, and I was consciously applying it rather than slapping it on quickly and rushing onto my SPF.
After the first use my skin felt really hydrated and balanced, which is a rare feeling for me. I’ve noticed that my skin doesn’t seem to get as oily as quickly since I’ve been using this formula, which I’ve put down to the cream balancing my natural oils. Overall, I think my skin looks more radiant and even toned – the slight redness I have has gone.
Within a few short weeks, La Mer’s Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream has become a security blanket for my skin and it’s definitely a formula I’ll reach for when my skin is feeling slightly irritated or dry.
The Verdict: Is La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream worth it?
No one had a bad word to say about La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream, € 98,00, especially if your skin is in need of some extra TLC. The soothing benefits of the Miracle Broth™ came through for Victoria’s inflammation, while Yasmin found her skin felt less oily and more balanced. Is it worth the price tag?
It depends on your budget. If you can afford £165 for a moisturiser, this is absolutely a great option to explore as the formula helps to hydrate, soothe, and nourish skin effortlessly. It’s an investment for your skin and the pot will last a long time as a little really does go a long way.
“I would absolutely recommend this to anyone,” says Yasmin. “I feel it suits all skin types and would especially recommend to anyone with sensitive skin as it’s so much trickier to find effective products which don’t leave your skin feeling red or irritated.”
