Looking For A New Woody Fragrance? These Are Our Favourites

At a time when brands are leaning towards ‘functional’ fragrances with an end feeling or emotion in sight, woody notes such as sandalwood, cedarwood and patchouli are being used by perfumers to evoke a sense of security, clarity and tranquillity. They also pair well with florals, citruses and gourmands to balance out any overtly sweet or pungent notes and are a go-to in unisex fragrances as they appeal to everyone, making them incredibly versatile.
Be aware that not all woods smell the same, however. "The quality of the wood ingredient can vary substantially,” says Bee Shapiro, founder of Ellis Brooklyn. “I personally love creamy options of sandalwood from certain fragrance houses but I struggle with sharper notes in other sandalwood strains. This is a situation where getting to know a fragrance brand makes a big difference so if you love the woods of a certain brand, I would say stick with that brand or look for others that are similar."
Woody fragrances are also wonderful go-to’s if you’re looking for scents that last. Often found in the base layers of a scent, they anchor it to the skin and give it a depth and warmth that liners. It’s also why they’re perfect for evening occasions or layering with lighter, brighter perfumes. Start with your woods then follow with your other favourite fragrances.
