What do Glossier You, Doux and Rêve Perfumes Smell Like? An Honest Review
There’s no denying that Glossier You’s legacy is a huge one, which is probably why Glossier waited until 2024 to launch two new fragrances. There’s Doux (French for ‘soft’) – a woody fragrance exuding sweet violet, Palo Santo, frankincense, myrrh, ambrox and ambrette notes. Then there’s Rêve (French for ‘dream’), a gourmand scent with notes of buttercream, plum butter, toasted almond, iris, sandalwood, ambrox and ambrette.
Following You’s footsteps, both Doux and Rêve are skin-scent enhancers with a warm and musky base enlivened by the base notes ambrox and ambrette. They’re also designed to smell differently on every individual – so we asked some of our team members to share their first impressions on Doux and Rêve, as well as the original You.
The top line on Glossier Doux and Rêve
• Both Doux and Rêve have an ambrox and ambrette base
• Doux is described as a woody fragrance
• Rêve is described as a gourmand fragrance
• They are designed to smell differently on everyone
BECCI'S GLOSSIER DOUX PERFUME REVIEW
I love a unique fragrance, something that isn’t obvious and one that people can’t put their finger on - it’s why one of my favourite signature scents is Floral Street Arizona Bloom Eau de Parfum, £23.20. I always get compliments on it and it’s not a run of the mill, mass market perfume which makes it feel super special. So, when Glossier’s two new perfumes, Doux and Rêve, arrived in the Space NK office, I was intrigued.
The Glossier You fragrance is pleasant but it’s not one I have in my line-up. The two new offerings lead with this attribute too – the fact that they will smell slightly different on each person, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with how Glossier You Doux Eau De Parfum, £49.60 smelt on my skin.
As you might expect from the colour of the bottle, it’s a milky, creamy scent that’s warm and comforting and described as a woody floral because of the sweet violet notes. For me, my skin picked up the Palo Santo and ambrox muskiness most, which gives it an almost powdery dry down.
It's definitely got cashmere cosy vibes, and I think as we come into autumn/winter it resonates with that. I’m not sure I’d reach for it on a sunny day or on holiday but for now, when I’m pulling on heavily textured clothing like velvet, wool and chunky scarves, it’s the perfect addition. It also has excellent longevity which is a big win for me as I often find my perfumes don’t last and disappear after an hour or two, whereas I could still smell Glossier Doux on me hours later. It also gleaned me plenty of comments and compliments about what I was wearing which showed it clearly sparked other people’s sensory systems too.
Sophisticated and wearable, this is a scent I’ll continue to wear after reviewing it. It’s also given my peers the element of surprise when I tell them it’s Glossier as they presumed it was from a more niche fragrance house. If you like sweetness and florals, it probably isn’t the perfume for you, but if you fancy something luxe that’s wintery without being overpowering, I’d highly recommend it, especially for the price point too.
VANESSA'S GLOSSIER RÊVE PERFUME REVIEW
My taste in fragrance is pretty established – I live for unapologetic sweetness (give me a vanilla base all day long), fruitiness, gourmand notes and florals. Three favourites are Diptyque Do Son Eau de Parfum, £153.00, Juliette Has A Gun Lust For Sun Eau de Parfum, £20.00 and, more recently, PHLUR Mood RIng Eau De Parfum, £23.20 – as well as anything from Sol de Janeiro. I’m all for nostalgic scents that make me feel like I’m in a candy shop or having an eternal summer, and my colleagues are so aware of my preferences that they know ahead of me whether a scent will meet my expectations.
Given this fact about my olfactory choices, I’ve never been a Glossier You girl. I’ll be honest – I’ve never properly smelled it, but I’m 99% sure it just wouldn’t be for me. However, when I heard Glossier was bringing out not one but two new perfumes, and that Glossier You Rêve Eau De Parfum, £49.60 was a sweet gourmand scent, I had high hopes.
Firstly, I have to give a shoutout to the striking bottle – as a fan of colour, it was love at first sight. As for the scent itself, I found it so unique. I would describe it as a very subtle kind of sweet, but that could be because I love really sweet fragrances. The note that comes through for me (or on me) the most is plum, so I find it quite fruity, velvety and dark. But, it’s not as ‘gourmand’ as I’d like it to be.
Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like it lasted that long on me, and found myself reapplying it a couple of times throughout the day. Again, this could be down to personal taste, as I do generally go OTT when it comes to spritzing. Longevity aside though, I don’t think Rêve is for me – it is, essentially, too grown up for my super sweet scent preferences. I’m not very adventurous when it comes to layering my fragrances, but I might try doing so with this scent since it’s technically a skin-scent enhancer that could lend itself to layering. If you like subtly dark and fruity notes with a touch of musk however, definitely give this scent a go, as it’s lovely!
OUR VERDICT ON DOUX AND RÊVE
While Becci was a big fan of Doux, Vanessa found Rêve a little too subtle for her taste. However, like the OG You, these are designed to smell differently on everyone, so expect your own unique scent to come through when trying either of these.
The Pros: Becci found Doux niche and luxurious, as well as perfect for the cooler months. “It’s not that shocking this has a luxe feel, as senior perfumer and industry pro Frank Voelkl is behind this scent,” she points out.
The Cons: The main issue Vanessa found was that Rêve didn’t appear to last long on her. “But, this varies so much from person to person,” she points out. “And I do prefer a scent with a heavier feel!”
Julie’s Glossier You perfume review
I’ll be honest, when we first heard that Glossier was launching at Space NK, I was very much excited to get my hands on Glossier Boy Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel-Pomade, £17.60 and the Glossier Cloud Paint Gel Cream Blush, £17.60. For me, Boy Brow is the ultimate brow groomer, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to experiment with the different Cloud Paint shades at last. I hadn’t given Glossier’s perfume much thought. In hindsight, this was a huge oversight on my part.
I can’t begin to tell you how obsessed I am with Glossier You Eau de Parfum, £25.60. It’s fresh and musky, but it’s not overpowering. If I had to sum it up succinctly, I’d say it’s cosy but light. I love that it smells completely different on everyone – it’s the ultimate ‘personal’ fragrance.
After about an hour of spritzing on my wrists, I would say it smelt quite creamy with a hint of floral and the woody undertones had come through with the dry-down. I can’t fairly comment on how long Glossier You Eau de Parfum lasts because I spritz my fragrances throughout the day by habit.
Beth’s Glossier perfume review
Unlike Julie, I made a beeline for Glossier You Eau de Parfum as soon as our samples arrived as I have several friends who are obsessed with this perfume. However, it genuinely does smell different on each of them, so it’s hard to pin down the main notes.
On me, I think the creamy musk notes came through quite a bit, which I loved as I feel like they’re cocooning and comforting without feeling cloying. I tend to lean towards quite clean, fresh scents rather than anything too heavy or floral, so Glossier You worked for me perfectly.
I spritzed it onto my wrists, hair and clothes at about 11am and still caught wafts of it when I got home after 7pm, so I was pretty happy with how long it lasted.
Our Verdict on Glossier You Eau de Parfum
We don’t say this lightly, but Glossier You Eau de Parfum, £25.60 is a fragrance you must seek out if you’re looking for a new perfume. Due to the unique nature of the scent, we recommend heading to your local Space NK to try it out on your skin – we doubt you’ll be disappointed though.
How To Layer Glossier You
Glossier You Eau de Parfum, £25.60 is one of perfume’s most mysterious and alluring scents; through some form of beauty sorcery, this skin-scent enhancer smells just a little bit different on everyone (inspiring its suitably poetic name) and uniquely enriches the intensity of any perfume – so it’s perfect for layering! Instilled with spicy pink pepper, sun-worshipping iris and warming amber, You is primed for pairing with more powdery, slightly sweeter scents.
Does Glossier You Eau de Parfum last?
You can expect the fragrance to last for a few hours on your skin, however if you’re looking for an all-day finish, be sure to invest in the eau de parfum rather than the toilette as it has a higher concentration of oils. Another trick is to layer the eau de parfum with the Glossier Glossier You Solid Perfume, £28.00.
